My phone rang around six the next morning.

“Yes, I’m looking for a Ms. Sylvia Wilcox.” The man on the other end had a slow and steady drawl.

It took a moment for the words to register before I said, “Yes. You have her. How can I help you?”

“My name is Paschal Oliver and I’m representing Ms. Madalyn Price. Mr. Carson Stark gave me your number. I really need to meet as soon as possible. We’ve got a situation.”

“Is Madalyn alright?” I asked, snapping to awareness and fearing the worst.

“Well, she’s in jail and facing a possible murder charge, but she’s okay. There’s something we need to discuss. It’s not really phone talk, so can we meet? I can come to you if that helps.”

“No. We’ll meet you somewhere. Name the place.”

“We?”

“Me and…. Listen, that’s complicated. Just name a place and we’ll be there soon. Someone… a guy named Brady is helping me look into things, and he’ll be with me.”

“Is this your assistant?”

“No. My assistant’s back in Michigan.”

Paschal was quiet for a moment before saying, “I knew I shouldn’t have taken this case.”

“Meet me at Anderson’s Cafe in town,” I said.

“Fine. See you in half an hour.”

“Sounds good.”

I hung up and headed straight for the shower. After throwing on a pair of black pants and a cream-colored top, I headed for the adjoining doors that separated my room from Brady’s.

“Hey, are you up?” I asked through the door.

“Yeah. Come on in.”

Brady was already dressed. It looked like he’d been up for hours.

“What are you doing?”

“Couldn’t sleep last night, so I got up around five, went for a walk, and headed to the lobby. Got us some breakfast stuff,” he said, pointing to a spread of fruits and pastries.

“That’s so nice. Thank you,” I said, heading over and grabbing an apple.

“What’s going on?”

“Madalyn’s lawyer just called. We need to meet with him in half an hour.”

“Okay. I’ll make this quick. I’ve been thinking. Why would Madalyn be with Nathan? She was working with the wife who said she was being abused. That doesn’t make sense.”

“I know. I don’t get it at all.”

“I have a theory,” Brady said.

“I’m all ears.”

“What if both Madalyn and Nathan were connected in some way that wasn’t related to Krista?”

“Like they were friends, or… Maybe they worked together?” I said, setting down the apple I had in my hand.

“Yeah. Think about it. Nathan seems to have been a humanitarian. So is Madalyn. It’s not unreasonable to think that they may have worked on something together.” Brady said.

“Madalyn was traveling here often and while the dates don’t line up perfectly, she was around when Nathan would take off from the office, saying he was meeting a friend.”

“Which could have been code for we’re going to save someone from an unpleasant situation. It seems like that was a mutually important thing to them.” Brady folded his arms and creased his brow.

“I hadn’t thought of it in those terms, but Madalyn would be open to helping. I’m sure of that. Good job, Brady.
